“I love the colors!” We hear this comment quite a bit in reference to our candles, but what about the colors makes them magickal? Colors surround us in our everyday lives, except of course today when we are under the canopy of the remnants of Ida. Think about it, on days like this, when heavy clouds block the light of the sun dulling the colors so that everything seems to be a shade of grey, how does it make you feel? In contrast, how do you feel on a bright sunny day, when the lush green grass, and vibrant colors of wildflowers seem so intense.
Some colors make us feel joy, others sorrow. Some fill us with a sense of foreboding, and others with joy and happiness. To entice us to buy more food and drink, restaurants will often use a color motif that is believed to encourage hunger. Therapists will often use certain colors in their offices to help make us feel more relaxed. Scientists tell us that colors are a product of the frequency of light. Frequency… vibration… now we can discuss why we use certain colors for our candles.
Our series of posts on the “Days of the Week” touch on the use of color a bit. Each day of the week relates to a certain ruling planet, and a certain color, and as a result, a certain energy. This energy is what we want to bring to bear when performing candle magick. As we stated in our first post of this series, it is believed that candles release their energy into the universe when burned to achieve a desired effect. As a result, the color of the candles, the frequency or vibration of the wax, has a direct effect on what we are trying to achieve.
If you google colors for candle magick, you will find a multitude of resources. While there are some differences of opinion, but most of the results are consistent. We use one of our favorite “go to” books on the subject of candle magick, Advanced Candle Magick by Ray Buckland, as a guide for what colors to use for each of our candles. His recommendations for candle color are consistent with most other sources and are widely considered to be the traditional colors used for countless generations.
We use twelve basic colors in all of our candles. The following table lists each color, and how it might be used.
White/Neutral | Purity, truth, innocence, cleansing. All purpose. If you don’t have a certain color, white can be used as it contains all colors in the spectrum. |
Red | Sexual Love, desire, courage, strength, Root Chakra |
Orange | Encouragement, creativity, adaptability, attraction, Sacral Chakra |
Yellow | Happiness, joy, confi dence, persuasion, Solar Plexus Chakra |
Green | Fertility, finances, growth, healing, luck, Heart Chakra |
Light Blue | Tranquility, understanding, patience, Throat Chakra |
Blue | Impulsiveness, abundance, power, intuition, Third Eye Chakra |
Purple | Communication, healing, business success, Crown Chakra |
Gold | Attraction, charm, confidence |
Pink | Love, honor, morality |
Brown | Grounding, hesitation, neutrality |
Black | Protection, loss, discord, release |
All of this being said, again, the most important thing is how does a certain color resonate with you? It is YOUR focus and YOUR intention that is foremost in any magickal working!
